Spill kits for your work

A workplace spill can have severe consequences. The most serious of these is the impact it could have on the health and safety of your staff and visitors. The potential catastrophic outcomes of a spill are highlighted in a report by Safe Work Australia. It indicates that in 2016, 16 per cent of work-related fatal injuries were associated with trips, falls and slips. This certainly brings home the importance of effectively cleaning or containing a workplace spill.

There are other potential consequences too. Consider how a workplace spill could also impact your business bottom line. Downtime caused by property or equipment damage, and associated costs if a spill is not dealt with appropriately in the first instance, can all add up. Would your business survive a workplace spill emergency?

Having the relevant spill kits available throughout your business is beneficial for some workplaces, and mandatory for others.  But how do you know which spill kit is right for your business?

Designed to quickly and safely clean or contain a spill, different kits are specifically created for different types of spills.  There are four main types of spill kits available:

GENERAL – A fast response to any oil, coolant, solvent or water-based fluid spill anywhere in your facility. Look for a kit that provides pads, pillows, SOCs, disposable bags, gloves, overalls and goggles, dustpan and mask. An ideal choice for laboratories, plants, work stations and construction sites.

CHEMICAL – For aggressive chemical spills like acids, bases and general chemicals.  Look for a kit that contains chemical spill pads, pillows, SOCs, disposable bags, gloves, overalls and goggles, dustpan and mask.  An ideal choice for lubricating and dispensing areas, loading bays and flammable goods stores.

OIL – Clean-up petroleum, hydrocarbons and other oil-based fluids. Look for a kit that contains oil only pads, pillows, SOCs, disposable bags, gloves, overalls, safety goggles and gloves, dustpan and mask.

BIO-HAZARD – For the clean-up of infectious waste from vomiting, bleeding or other bodily fluids.  Look for a kit that contains a face mask, apron, gloves, absorbent powder, detergent, bags and cleaning cloths.  Ideal for schools, hotels, bars and offices.

It’s not just your onsite locations that might require a spill kit. The needs of mobile workers are equally important, and vehicle spill kits are available that are designed to fit into trucks, vans, utes and cars.

Appointing someone to be responsible for the upkeep of the spill kits is a good idea. They should regularly check the contents to ensure they are present, up-to-date and in good order.  This person should also be responsible for replenishing the kit.

No matter what industry you operate in, health and safety should be your number one priority.  A carefully considered and well-maintained spill kit is an essential part of your organisation’s health and safety plan.
