The weekend feels like it went faster than the Bathurst 1000 and, before you know it, your alarm is sounding the Monday morning wake-up bells and Mondayitis has struck you down.

There are many definitions as to what Mondayitis actually is, but there’s little doubt that it’s one of the most commonly suffered ailments around the workplace.

“Mondayitis” is that feeling of lethargy and apprehension at the start of the work week. It’s feeling out of place, disorganised and unmotivated, as so many people experience upon returning to work after the weekend.

What's the cure?

Quitting your job to go on a never-ending cruise isn’t a realistic option, and let’s face it – there are definite perks to keeping your job. Sometimes a small tweak to your approach to Mondays can be all it takes to change work-dread into workday appreciation.

Tip 1: Don't sleep in on the weekends

You’re so tired, and it feels so good to finally catch up on weeks’ worth of sleep debt. The problem is, sleeping in temporarily resets the body clock so you’re all out of whack by the time Monday rolls around again.

Flinders University believe that Mondayitis is closely linked with sleeping patterns and have discovered that the depression people experience at the start of the week has a lot to do with our sleeping habits.

As tempting as it is to sleep in, having a regular sleep pattern is much better for your mood and overall health.

Tip 2: Plan your week

It’s Monday already, and you’re staring at a growing pile of emails and tasks to be completed asap. It just seems so overwhelming!

Try creating a list of tasks and meetings ahead of time, and label them with their priority for the week. An hour of Friday afternoon planning means those deadlines are less likely to sneak up on you, and your week is likely to be more productive and less daunting.

Having a plan for the week helps to remove the clutter from your mind and allows you to focus on the important stuff.

Tip 3: Get Positive

Start your Monday by doing something that inspires you. Have something nourishing and delicious for breakfast, read a short motivational quote, dance to your favourite music or play an uplifting song while you get ready in the morning.

It sounds simple, but if you have the intention of starting your Monday with a positive attitude, then you can develop this into a habitual mindset. When the day starts on a positive note, then Mondays don’t seem so bad after all.

Tip 4: Organise your workspace

Remember, Mondays are all about hitting the reset button and starting with a clean slate.

Prior to getting into your heavy workload, take a moment to tidy up your work space, sort out your filing and get rid of unnecessary items from your desk.  Having a messy work space can be counter-productive and clutters your mind, leaving you feeling unmotivated.
